BOOK REVIEW: Monster Hunter International

This book is a rip-roaring action slug-fest that doesn't pull punches, that drives the characters through hell and back.

Monster Hunter International book cover
Amazon / Kobo

*4.5 STARS*
Military Fantasy

If you've been in the workforce long enough, you will probably eventually end up with a boss that rages like a beast, but few end up with one that is an actual beast. In this case: a Werewolf. But CPA Owen Zastava Pitt does, and after he has a gruesome, no-holds barred fight to the death, he tosses his boss out the fourteenth-story office window. It's presumed that Owen's next performance review won't go over so well. While Owen nearly dies from his wounds, it turns out there is a whole lot more in store for this paper pushing accountant who is just trying to be normal.

But normal isn't good for survival. And when the fate of the world is at stake, it's a good thing that "Z" (as his friends call him) decides to join Monster Hunter International. An elite organization of monster hunters. Because, as it turns out, pretty much all of the myths and legends we've ever heard of—whether it be werewolves, vampires, or orcs and elves—end up as true.

But they also end up as nothing in comparison to what is about to happen.

Monster Hunter International (book one of the series) is inventive, fun, clever. This is a great piece of modern-day military fantasy playing with age-old monster tropes. Highly recommended. Be warned that it is not for the faint of heart: there is plenty of blood and guts flying about, and a little bit of profanity. But hey, what do you expect when you are confronted by legions of the undead, giant flying stone gargoyles, and Master Vampires that can move faster than you can shoot?

The action sequences are intense, inventive, and there are a LOT of them, but in a good way.

The interactions with the Federal Agents from the Monster Control Bureau serve as an interesting plot device as the characters have to deal with government intrusion into their business. So, not only does MHI have to effectively save the world, they have to do it with the government breathing down their necks and getting in the way. Makes the story a little bit extra-relevant for anyone that has paid attention to the government overreach of recent years.

While Z is a crack shot, a bruiser, and a big guy that might normally be pegged as the brute of the bunch, he is analytical, and ends up with some interesting psychic powers. There is astral-projection, reliving an evil maniac's age-old memories, and a peculiar Old Man that seems to live in Owen's sub-conscious, and yet is able to effect things (at times) in the real world to interesting results.

One of the only complaints I have about the book is with the romantic subplot. Z has a big crush on someone, and while his interest is well telegraphed, the return interest is not...at first. The lady in question is expressly not interested and has a boyfriend she is apparently committed to. Though he is a pretentious Hollywood-style douche bag. So you know she'll come around eventually to Z's interests. The problem is that when she does the timing comes across as inappropriate. Yes, they all just died, and then undied—No. No. I'm not ruining that one, you'll have to read it for yourself—and the world is possibly about to come to an end if they can't prevail against an unstoppable evil force, so the prospect of death and never being able to utter her true feelings to Z are of course a decent motivation for the ill-timing, but it could have been done a little better. Small complaint. No big deal.

TRIGGER WARNING: As in there are a lot of triggers...and bullets, and guns. Oh yes, all kinds of guns. In such detail and breadth that if you aren't a gun nut, you won't know what four-fifths of these things are. But you probably stop looking them up by the third gun mentioned, because the story pulls you forward, and you just trust in the author's ability to paint a picture for you. But then, if all of these triggers bothers you, I'm not sure how else you'd think to fight off legions of the undead, giant stone gargoyles that can play can-opener with armored vans, and worse! Perhaps call 9-1-1, hope your local police department wasn't defunded, and responds faster than it takes for some unsavory character to commit untold atrocities upon you?

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a good idea.

No, you do what a red-blooded American does. You unleash hell and fight.

Hoo-ah!

*Ahem* Where was I? Oh, yes. That's exactly what Z does.

So, if you want big conflict, lots of action, lots of guns, the Supernatural, and end of the world scenarios, Monster Hunter International is a fun read.

4.5 out of 5 silver-tipped bullets for this one.

The Long Awaited Release of Kip's Return (Kip the Quick, Book II)

Exciting news. Kip has returned. The book is finally out! I've been itching to share this with you for far too long. Click here to get it now!

*EARLY READERS SAY:

“…I really dragged out the Epilogues because I didn't want to be done. I really enjoyed the book, and I like how the Epilogues keep me looking forward to Book 3”

"Loving the 'trouble' Kip is getting into. ”

I started writing Kip's adventures in Texas, when we lived there for a year. Life was full of upheaval after moving cross-country from California with two young children and no one in the area to help. My wife took on extra tasks like a trooper, never complaining, even when my work hours included night shifts in downtown Dallas. Finding time to write amidst the move, new jobs, and an entirely new area was quite the challenge. But one story idea that came to mind and stuck was a witty rascal of a thief in a dry hot land ravaged regularly by terrible storms. He wanted out of this hell hole, and he was willing to lie, cheat, and steal to do so. Thinking about others wasn't high on his list, but when the heist of a lifetime landed in his lap with an opportunity to flee this bastion of suffering, his friends helped him out—putting themselves in deep peril in the process. To keep them safe, Kip found himself challenged with the making the ultimate choice.

Now the sequel is out, and ready for you. It's over three times as long as the first, with more characters, more mystery, and more fun action to dig your teeth into.

Sign up for the newsletter to stay informed of any sales for this book and for the next one. I also include my short and exciting Seeking the Veil fantasy adventure series for free for all newsletter sign-ups.

BOOK REVIEW: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

Emotional impact with every grain.

[Affiliate Link]
*5 STARS*

Salt to the Sea tells of the real-world tragedy that swept up and down the Baltic States from Lithuania to Estonia as Hitler’s machine began to crumble under Stallin’s Red Army. Four young lives are impacted in her tale, fleeing the Russian invading force, each with their own mystery that unveils in careful precision as they stumble toward Gotenhafen and refuge upon the repurposed cruise ship: the Wilhem Gustloff.

Sepetys’s prose is spare and exacting, cutting like a knife, weaving four storylines slowly together until the bitter, climactic end. Despite the circumstances, she builds a sweet and genuine romance and each character’s mystery unfolds with each piece adding and building upon the rest.

There is Emilia – spoiled innocence with a haunted past; Florian – desperate, clever, seeking a daring retribution; Joanna – determined to make amends; and Alfred - delusional, a day dreamer, eager to be the best German soldier he can be (even if he can not.)

Just as salvation seems eminent, the long road over, dear friends lost, while new ones cling together, their refuge is targeted by a Russian sub and 9,000 perish in the worst maritime disaster of modern times. But the story does not end as you expect, and Sepetys once again proves her mettle with a conclusion that is poignant, heart-wrenching, and yet still rewarding.

Rare is it to want to read a book again—especially right after—but this was one of those oddities. And this from a guy sunk eyeball deep in the lore of fantasy and the cautionary wonder of sci-fi. Go figure.

As a novel, Salt to the Sea is superb; as a piece of history, slid under the magnifying glass, it is a telling reminder that in war, there are no winners and the true losses happen between the lines of war.

As conflicts boil throughout the world, as one country goes to fight some evil for the “greater good”, there are real people stuck in the middle, suffering. It is a point to remember.

BOOK REVIEW: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I read Hunger Games, finally. Started great. But the actual contest was fairly contrived, and the fake romance tension missed the mark for me.

[Affiliate Link]
*3 STARS*

Still, I continued on to read Book 2. Which just goes to show that a great concept can pull your story along. So long as you don't totally flub it.

And when I say "totally", I mean, she was pretty close.

Nothing worse than when a character acts inconsistently. Not to say we act consistent in real life, 100% of the time. But there needs to be a good reason for that inconsistency, and it needs to make sense.

All I have to say is...Poison Berries. Double Suicide. My thoughts? Katniss was nuts, it was a cop-out moment for the author, no way the Gamemakers would have stepped in. They want drama. How does it get any better than that?

3 arrows for hitting all the points, even if they were forced at times, and for a strong concept.

BOOK REVIEW: Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop

Lavishly sensual, sexuality breathes throughout the book, with a humming roar of violence lurking in the background, or sometimes just exploding across the page in a fury.

[Affiliate Link]
*3 STARS*

Daughter of the Blood is Book 1 of the Black Jewels trilogy, where there is a Light Realm, Dark Realm, a Twisted Kingdom, and for powerful practitioners of the Craft they can travel through the veil of death itself. There is a struggle in the background, an epic contest that transcends realities, but for now the story centers on the ruler of Hell, a lost son, and a cast of characters raging at their bonds. But the story ends up very personal, very small; there are no epic battles, though the danger often buzzes in the background.

Kip the Quick. New Fantasy Heist - *COMING SOON*

Howdy bibliophiles, my work on Kip the Quick is rounding the bend and I have something exciting to share.

I've heard an incessant blathering on, and on, and on about 99Designs. I thought I'd finally check them out, and wow! Not to say that I will never seek a book cover artist to work with direct, but with limited time to choose, there was great appeal to plunking down my design brief and asking for submissions.

And let me tell you (if by chance you are blind and can't see the above pics), there were some phenomenal results. I've already selected a winner, but take the poll, and tell me what you think of the 3 finalist designs that I wrangled my brain over.

Curious? Want to try it yourself? I heard about it first on the Rocking Self Publishing podcast (great  business/marketing listen for any of you indie writers out there), and I'll point out there is a power-pack upgrade you can get via this link (and support Simon's awesome endeavors on RSP) http://www.99designs.com/rsp. Worked for me -- and will give your contest extra attention.

And very importantly, a BIG THANKS to the wonderful artist contributions; and all their time and passion. Running the design contest was fantastic. Time permitting, I'm hoping I can snag them into giving some work-in-progress breakdowns that I can share.

It was also a lot of work. I'll give a piece of advice, since I almost never do that... If this sounds like something you want to pursue, be aware that you will still need to dedicate Time for good results.

Focus up front on providing a detailed design brief for the artists, including pictures of what you want and descriptions of the concept, the story, the scene, the character(s). But be open to what they provide.

Give detailed Feedback. I was surprised multiple times as the front-runner changed position between 3 different artists. I don't think this would have happened if I hadn't kept up with each iteration, giving my critique and clarifying on what I wanted. The end results is every bit as awesome as I had hoped for, but still different from my initial concept.

What is Kip the Quick, you ask?

A Heist Like no other; a Payday to match. If Kip can only Survive.

The novel will be done in the next couple months, and under 200 pages. Sign up for the newsletter to hear about pre-orders, the release and any specials I plan to run. And get free stories!

Do you like to leave book reviews? I need your help! E-mail me, or comment below. For a limited time I'll be willing to part with free ebook copies of Kip the Quick for a potential review. No strings attached, and no hard feelings.

I'll tell you more, but for now, here's a tease:

*Scene 1*

I strolled down the thoroughfare, nodding at a merchant as I tilted my hat, a bright pink feather bobbing at its top, even as I snatched a fresh roll, still steaming; slipping it into a low pocket.

Misdirection, grab the eye, make them see what you want them to.

“A splendid day, miss,” I bowed to a fine lady on the right, my very most sophisticated. She turned and touched her veiled cheek.

“Charmed, I’m sure.” She fluttered eyelashes painted a vibrant blue, the smile as perfectly manicured as she. And false.

But so was I. Kip the Quick. Strutting like a spoiled brijold of this piss-poor town. But one had to fit in. And on the Ave of Lords, where jewels were sold, fortunes made and lost: no one watched the food.

My stomach trembled. “Shh, in a moment.” The smell of meat pies and custard delicacies served in real glass bowls was almost enough to make me stagger.

The smile rolled off my face as I adjusted the scarf, the fabric not as fine as it looked, when I locked eyes with one of the ashen brijold. The man had all the jerky motions of one so wasted on colaine, his skin was an obvious gray beneath the rich clothing; then there were the dead eyes, and a slack jaw that seemed to clench, to create some sort of masquerade of strength and sternness, that he had probably lost long ago. The man dismissed me without a flicker of emotion, set down his teacup, the server giving him some lost platitudes as he tilted his hat to the lady entering with all the warmth of a clock striking five. The brijold lifted his vibrant blue scarf off his shoulder and with a stiff swing — as if striking a child — swung it across his face and tied it quick.

I turned to admire a porcelain vase with swirls of ochre and obsidian that would cost enough to toss me into the Peacekeepers’ pits until my teeth fell out. I tried not to stare at the ashen’s half finished biscuit, dripping with apple jam that the server moved to sweep up as if it were nothing better than a fruit rind picked clean. My hands hovered near the vase. It would make a loud noise, draw attention, enough for me to save the succulent morsel.

But the moment passed and the wasteful fool went strutting from the building, his polished boots ringing against cobbles that seemed to have never suffered the deluge of a summer dust storm, and the server picked the offending delicacy up, and into the wooden tub it went.

My eyes lingered as she set it on a side counter at the rear, sweeping back by the polished tables, her skirt swishing behind. It was an awfully clean-looking waste bin. Maybe I could wait for it out back later. But I sighed instead.

And now — because I had lingered too long otherwise — I turned to the vase merchant, exclaiming profusely at how lovely the vase was; drawing his attention, his eyes practically sparkling with the certainty of a full price sale.

Curse my wanton belly, but now it was time to make a show.

“But alas,” I swept my hand wide, nearly shaking with the torment of it all. “How can I truly do right with this exquisitely crafted piece. By the window is where it should go,” I told the merchant — leaning forward, his mouth parted, the smile dimpling his cheeks — “looking over the garden.” I frowned. “And yet the Divandi oil will arrive tomorrow.” A terrible tragedy. “That is the only place for this piece. You said it was a Gerald? No? Either way, it is a fine piece, tranquil, yet bursting with energy! I’ll send over a friend instead. Yes. They need this vase. Yes, that is what I will do.”

“I look forward to it, good sir,” he bowed briefly at the waist, finally finding a moment to speak, “and who should I—”

But I was already sweeping away with all the arrogance of one born to it, waving my hand behind me. “A good day, sir.”

Walking rapidly, glancing at the sky, absurdly late for a most pressing engagement, I passed by four more stalls, then ducked down an alley. I plucked off my hat, and slid one arm from my coat as I reversed it, the inside stained and ripped. With quick motions, I untucked the lining, pulled it around and over the rest, turning the coat into a satchel – dingy and as poor as I. A clever bit of sewing that little Kay would have been proud of—

Except for the stealing part. She would never have condoned that.

Into the lumpy satchel went a pair of polished shoes and the starchy pants of which I owned entirely one pair. One pair that was starting to smell of rancid butter. But that could be rectified.

The prize of the day was a smattering of pastries, two apples, something else I could not name and the smell was nearly reward enough. But now I couldn’t return to the Ave for another week or more.

Melting into the shadows, I sprinted away, satchel on my shoulder, bare feet barely brushing the cobbles. Two turns and I climbed a rough stone wall, leapt onto the roof and three roofs later was sitting in the shadow of a little used lane, munching happily on my find.

I touched a brass ring hung round my neck, pulled it out from under my tunic, admiring the little whorls crafted at the edges, well tarnished, but the touramine stone at its center still sparkled of jade and twilight. I looked at it as I licked a spot of custard on my lips, remembering back to my first theft...
